During National Lorry Week we’re speaking to our amazing employees about what it means to work in logistics, how they got into the industry, what the future could look like and why they believe logistics is a great career choice.
In today’s episode, meet Dean Hawke, Senior Transport Planner at Trucklink EU.
How did you get into the industry and what brought you here?
Upon washing my first car shortly after leaving college, one of our neighbours ask me if I was interested in working for a timber yard helping out with the daily driver scheduling.
How long have you worked in the sector?
Over 25 years and still loving it.
What does the word ‘logistics’ mean to you?
It means the world to me with the enjoyment of making sure a delivery gets from A to B in the most effective method possible and keeping the country supplied with essential everyday products and of cause treats, Logistics is the art of managing material flows.
What makes the logistics industry such a great place to work?
No day / night shift is ever the same, your team is your work family which includes the drivers, because without the drivers nothing would get delivered, and with the buzz you get helping somebody out with finding solutions to daily issues that have occurred with out of the box thinking from dealing with the clients / drivers / team members and driving home after finishing your shift feeling accomplished.
What can we do to encourage more young people to work in logistics?
The industry needs to be offering more opportunities for young people via apprenticeship schemes from warehousing to driving though to office base logistics.
What does the future hold for our industry with innovation and new technology?
With all the current media coverage regarding our eco system at the moment and ways of protecting it for our next generation, the truck manufacturers are already working hard with better and more effective ways that a truck can be powered, and it may not be long before we start seeing these technologies coming through our industry, with some technologies already being used like vehicle cameras to improve safety on the our roads thought to drivers applying there daily vehicle / trailer checks and reporting any issues before leaving the yard or even whilst on the road directly to the office teams PC screens, the future for me holds exciting times ahead for our industry and has never been a better time for our younger generation to get board the fast moving train.
