During National Lorry Week we’re speaking to our amazing employees about what it means to work in logistics, how they got into the industry, what the future could look like and why they believe logistics is a great career choice.
In today’s episode, meet Andy Philpot, Fleet Manager at Trucklink EU.
How did you get into the industry and what brought you here?
I started as a loader at a local parcel company after leaving school, which led to me being asked to become a driver's mate. The role as a driver's mate was to learn different areas so that if a driver was absent, we would be able to tell the driver where to go. This then led on to me taking my HGV licences before ending up in the office and moving up the ladder, to where I am now, running Trucklink's whole fleet department.
How long have you worked in the sector?
I have worked in transport for 43 years.
What does the word ‘logistics’ mean to you?
Transportation of supplier's goods from A to B in a professional and compliant way.
What makes the logistics industry such a great place to work?
Every day is different, whether you work in the office, as a driver, in the warehouse or as a technician, there are always new challenges daily. Also, meeting and talking to different people daily!
What can we do to encourage more young people to work in logistics?
I think there needs to be more training at an affordable cost to encourage young people in logistics because most of what we do is very expensive, e.g driver training and CPC courses etc. and there are just no incentives for young people to do it.
What does the future hold for our industry with innovation and new technology?
Technology has moved on significantly over the years I have bene in transport, and it is making a massive difference, and it can only get better with all the new tech on the market which in turn helps businesses run smoother and more compliant.
