During National Lorry Week we’re speaking to our amazing employees about what it means to work in logistics, how they got into the industry, what the future could look like and why they believe logistics is a great career choice.
In today’s episode, meet Nigel Todd, Managing Director of Trucklink EU.
How did you get into the industry and what brought you here?
I left school at 16, having a passion for driving from a very early age, I started out as a van driver and was destined to make a career out of it. I quickly realised that this was the industry I wanted to work in and went on to pass my CPC National & International in March 1990 aged 21 and haven't looked back since!
How long have you worked in the sector?
From Driver to Transport Manager to Business Owner, my career, which has spanned over 30 years, has certainly been educational. More so recently, the last couple of years have been challenging, unpredictable, fast pace but most of all exciting.
What does the word ‘logistics’ mean to you?
Solutions, partnerships and offering key links to our customers’ successes. There are many examples of how my business has allowed local business to thrive through market leading technology. Logistics is about understanding the customers’ key strategy and to help them compete efficiently in their own marketplace.
What makes the logistics industry such a great place to work?
Whether you prefer the physical intervention as a driver, warehouse operative or technician. Or administration, planning, customer services, to management, leading teams in many different aspects such as compliance, health & safety, commercial sale & marketing to strategic business planning. Logistics is so varied it offers opportunities for everyone!
What can we do to encourage more young people to work in logistics?
Awareness and education as to how logistics and transportation is the heartbeat to all industries. We have recently experienced interruption to our lives when key supply chains such as medication, food and fuel supplies are disrupted. This week especially, we should respect and value the contribution each and every employee makes to keep that vital supply chain alive.
How could we encourage more women to get involved in the industry?
The advancement in our industry has allowed us to create prosperous and attractive opportunities. No longer should we be classed as the dirty, unregulated menaces congesting our road and damaging the environment. Our business is serious and has never been more regulated to become safe and environmentally friendly. We don’t just drive trucks. Ladies, this can be glamorous and exciting….
What does the future hold for our industry with innovation and new technology?
Market leading technology has allowed us to become key component for local & international companies of many industries. The future is exciting and will only expand and surprise us along the way.
